Our team consists of a group of ladies in Alexandra Township, South Africa, Greatheart enable these women to feed their families, and they really love what they do!

Lillian Moyo

Lillian Moyo

Lilly is the Go-Go (granny) of our group, born in 1952, Lillian has a wealth of knowledge to share. She is a single mother of five and has three grand-children. Not only is she a mother to her own children, but Lilly is a mother to all in her community – her door is constantly open to all who need a little care. Lillian studied sewing and in 2004 after working as a manager in a bar for 10 years, she started doing what she loves the most; sewing and looking after children.

Greatheart started putting Lillian’s sewing skills to work two and a half years ago. In Lilly’s own words: “Since I have been involved with Greatheart, my life has changed allot, it has helped me in many ways. I am now able to put food on the table and my sewing skills have improved. I am very happy.”

Greatheart and The African Children’s Feeding Scheme are Phumzi’s only means of surviving and we are so glad to have her as part of our team.

Maria

Maria, mother to three sons was born from a family of artists and this is apparent in her ever creative designs. Her work is immaculate and she has served an important part in training the ladies to do new stitches and challenges them to try new designs. In her own words, “Greatheart has allowed me time to think about being creative. Before I sold vegetables, but I now have an additional income which helps me to support my three boys. When I sit and sew, I think about the next design I can make.”

Happiness has 3 sons, she is currently unemployed other than the work she does as part of the Greatheart project. Happiness says that this project has really helped; she is able to put food on the table and no longer feels completely alone.

Candice Poole

Community service is my life. I believe that we cannot complain about the state of our nation, unless we are prepared to do something to change it. It is because of my strong belief in community service that I started Greatheart and I challenge all individuals to become involved in community service or in a charity in some way. It is through helping those that are less fortunate than yourselves that you get a true sense of fulfillment. Through “giving back” one sees that things that seem to be huge issues in your life are no longer as significant when compared to the hardship that many others experience on a daily basis. I have a Fine Arts degree as well as a teaching diploma; it is wonderful to be able to use my creativity as well as my teaching ability on a day to day basis with the project.

Our project began in Alexandra Township 9 years ago. It started with us giving therapeutic massage to a group of 50 malnourished, some HIV positive, some being brought up in child-headed households and some orphans. The project then extended itself to supporting these children when they graduated to Primary School, by buying their school uniforms, books, bags and paying their fees where necessary. The support continues until they reach high school. We then introduced our Greatheart Gifts project to the mothers and grandmothers of these children. This began two years ago and has grown from strength to strength. We are committed to the upliftment of these children and are passionate about our wonderful relationships that have developed over the years. We are humbled and honored to have this opportunity to be of service to this community.
